We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.
Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

So maybe Elvis really is alive! Unless it turns out to be an artful fake, it seems that contrary to my long held views, Osama bin Laden may indeed still be alive.
Quite why it has taken this long for a video of him saying something timely is hard to fathom, but then many of the things the likes of bin Laden do defies rational analysis. I am astonished by this turn of events.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

You, me, Theodopoulos Pherecydes, Scott Wickstein, David Gillies, R C Dean, Ivan Kirigin, Mark Steyn and a cast of thousands made the same mistake.
Maybe Osama thought playing dead would take some of the heat off?
The political betting markets initially moved towards Bush on the news but have settled back. Still close, but with Bush a tad ahead…
He don’t look well…
It was Karl Rove with a fake beard!
Did you spot the subtle joke about Sweden? I’m still looking for a full transcript by the way… 🙂
He had no arguments that led to any conclusions – just a rambling stream of consciousness that meandered all over Torah Boring. But, fellow citizens of, and loiterers on, Samizdata, OBL is No 1 on the Hit Parade over on the BBC’s [Don’t] Have Your Say. Box office boffo.
OBL is still dead
Mullah Omar is still dead.
Actually, EddieP, I agree with you. It’s just a gut feeling but this guy was a chatterbox and I cannot believe he refrained from making a few more farewell appearances on the world stage for so long.
There was no newspaper front page held up behind him, so this could have been made any time, with lots of dupes for other nominee contenders. He didn’t say anything current.
He’s current enough to know it’s Bush versus Kerry. Although, I suppose he could have gone to the trouble of recording a releasable interview for each of the Bush vs Whoever pairings as they were before the Democrat primary. Which means he was most likely alive in March 11th 2004 (when Kerry won the democrat nomination), and absolutely certainly alive on Dec 1st 2002 (the earliest he could have guessed Kerry, the first announcement of his intention to run for president).
Well, come on: If he made a new tape every week, he’d soon lose his reputation as the biggest threat to the west and just become another slowly dying has-been terrorist, and he’d entirely lose his idealist jesus-come-robin hood attraction if he started talking about small-scale things with relevance, no, best to talk about the big oil satan and zionist conspiracies. This guy must have had some PR certification or something – or maybe he is just smart for a man who lives in a cave.
Nice link wiggy.
A quick google found a transcript from the BBC, if anyone is yet to find one.
Also, a lot of his power lies in confusion and uncertainty. This is a thing the best horror film makers now. Hinting at the terror has a much greater effect than actually showing it.
Dalmaster, that is a transcript from 2003. I don’t believe anyone’s published the full transcript of the latest.
What I’ve seen is…decidedly strange. And what’s up with the clerical robes? Where did the hard-bitten camo guy with the lucky AK-47 go?
Oh, and count me among the bet-losers. I swore he was dead, but I think this thing’s pretty fresh.
Yeah, I was shocked too. I’d thought even if we hadn’t got him, he’d have died from kidney failure by now. Which suggests he has access to medical facilities in Pakistan.
Unless it’s just a lookalike…
I happen to think Binnie Boy’s party political broadcast on behalf of the Islamofascist Funda-MENTALIST Party on the eve of the U.S. Presidential elections just handed George Walker Bush a second term in the White House.
It reminded average Joe America that the threat is very real and still out there threatening death and destruction upon the civilian populace. And most Yanks think that the rootin’ tootin’ Texan cowboy/oil-man, G.W Bush is tougher on terrorism than the elitist Bostonian liberal “stiff” who’s fronting the Democrats. Kerry eh, what a bore.
Politically speaking, Bush is a known quantiy. You know what the guy believes in and what he stands for. Whereas John Kerry, well he’s a little like a weather vane. He points in what ever direction the wind blows in. Jeezus, talk about indecisive. For something one minute, and against the next.
In times of uncertainty and conflict, people want strong decisive leaders. Kerry just doesn’t fit the bill.
If Bush doesn’t win this next election, I’ll pickle my nuts and wear my scrotum for a hat.
I think Bush will win again and then a brutal shit-fight with the Muslim crazies in Fallujah, followed sometime in G.W’s second term by a U.S confrontation with Iran and their Mullah’s desires for the nuclear Islama-Bomb.
It is telling how similar bin Laden’s claims regarding Bush and US policy are to the paleo-libertarian/Michael Moore/anti-war crowd.
Nice company these people keep.
I’m not happy. I want Bush to win (I’m not thrilled with him, but nonetheless…), I think he’s going to, and I think bin Laden helped.
But that just means the opposition will spend the next four years saying, “it wasn’t a mandate for Bush, it was the bin Laden Bounce.”
Whereas, I thought Bush was going to win anyway and they were going to have to say, “it wasn’t a mandate for Bush, it’s just that Kerry was such a terribly unattractive candidate.”
Of course, if Kerry wins next Tuesday in spite of all, that faint popping sound you hear will be my spleen exploding.
Ken – I am pretty sure at this point that OBL’s supposed kidney problem was a piece of deliberate deception put out by him and his cronies, and propagated by his sympathizers within Pakistan’s ISI. I’ve got a passing familiarity with the kind of daily routine someone with those kinds of kidney problems has to go through, and there is no way bin Laden could have survived as a fugitive on the move for this long without having regular access to some rather cumbersome machinery that he would have to spend several hours per day hooked up to.
It’s possible that he got a transplant, but how difficult would that be to do with nobody finding out? Even Zarqawi couldn’t get nasal surgery in Bagdhad without intelligence agencies finding out about it.
It reminded average Joe America that the threat is very real and still out there threatening death and destruction upon the civilian populace.
Compare that with this:
“We want people to think ‘terrorism’ for the last four days,” said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. “And anything that raises the issue in people’s minds is good for us.”
Now, cover up your “Protect Our Civil Liberties” T-shirt, sign your Bush loyalty oath, then recite the Bush pledge while looking at Bush campaign mailings featuring several photos of the burning WTC towers.
I gotta say, it all reminds me of this. What do you guys think? If you agree, perhaps you could smack some sense into right-wing blogdom before it’s too late.
In case that’s too heavy, try this or this.
yeah, it is kind of a nightmarish choice… in fact, no real choice at all. Choose your lesser evil America, whoever that might be, but just realise that no matter who you choose, the one thing you can be sure of is that you will have voted for evil.
Oh, I know. Sometimes I think if I have to watch four more years of George Bush sawing off the heads of tourists with a table knife on the evening news, I’ll just scream.
Shawn:
“It is telling how similar bin Laden’s claims regarding Bush and US policy are to the paleo-libertarian/Michael Moore/anti-war crowd.”
Ok, two questions for you and others:
1. When Bin Laden says “Each and every state that does not tamper with our security will have automatically assured its own security,” ((Link) do you believe him?
2. If not, why not?
“Ok, two questions for you and others:
1. When Bin Laden says “Each and every state that does not tamper with our security will have automatically assured its own security,” ((Link) do you believe him?”
No.
“2. If not, why not?”
For three reasons.
First, this statement is clearly a backtrack from OBL’s previous statements about rebuilding the ancient Caliphate and using that as a base to launch global jihad. So either he’s lying, or he knows he has lost the war and is trying to squeeze out a lesser “victory”. Either way I dont trust him.
Second. Anyone who seriously thinks that leaving the entire Middle East to the likes of bin Laden and co and just staying out of the region is going to give us security is a fool, or a Libertarian Party candidate. Allowing the ME to be ruled by people who’s stated goal is the submission of the world to Islam by any means necessary is not a staretgy for security.
Third. Oil. Exactly how would having the entire ME’s oil supply conrolled by Islamic terrorists give us security?
No, bin Laden here is playing to an audience that he thinks he can influence, and he may be right. Bin Laden is evil but not stupid. The left, the paleo-right and those slaves who just want to be left alone to vegetate in front of the tv will grab at any chance for “peace in our time”. He knows this. But in the long run all we would be doing in pretending we can have peace and security without first defeating militant Islam is putting our heads on the chopping block.
