Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. Eastern Europe is a great place to live, but I wouldn’t want to visit here.
I come from Croatia, and most of my family comes from Serbia and Bosnia, These areas are Balkan/Eastern Europe, and they’re not all that bad. Its not some kind of hardship driven hell over there, she’s bieng melodramatic.
I live in Romania and I can partly symphatise with her, but there are things here which I wouldn’t give up for the world.
Stephan, no-one’s talking hardship. For me, this part of the world sucks. My personal reasons, memories and opinions. Period.
So no need to get so defensive and.. offensive.
I can say that said quote sums up the feelings of each and every Hungarian I know…
otherwise, I agree with Michael. If I could manage to duck the taxes, I’d go native in a heartbeat.
Adriana, if “they’re not all that bad. Its not some kind of hardship driven hell over there, she’s bieng melodramatic.” is defensive and offensive then what is “this part of the world sucks” ? The new motto of the Slovak tourism council?
Dissing one’s home country is the national sport in Eastern Europe, but it’s unseemly in those who don’t live there (a group you seem to have joined).
if is true (and it is) is not unseemly. nothing works well in this part of world and fantasy not to admit. more people admit things are fucked up then soner are fixed. not hell in slovakia but could be much better, no? sorry for not so good english
Personally, I manage to be uncomfortable anywhere. Must be a Slovak thing.
