We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

A fascinating postscript in military history The Confederate crew of world’s first submarine (or more correctly ‘submersible’) use effectively used in combat, were buried with military honours yesterday in Charleston, South Carolina. Their boat, the CSS Hunley, was discovered in 1995 and raised in 2000 from where it sank in Charleston harbour in 1864. The Hunley went down shortly after having sunk a blockading US Navy armed sloop, the USS Housatonic.
This is an interesting end to a fascinating chapter in military history

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

14 southern governors were invited to the funeral. None attended. Shame. Shame on them.
OT – Why does uploading a 14 word, 2 line comment to Samizdata.net using my blazing fast connection take what seems like an hour?
Only 54 seconds for that one. Woo hoo.
There’s a not bad TV movie about this astonishing submersible called “The Hunley”. Bizarrely, it stars Armand Assante, but is riveting and informative for all that. These guys spent a lot of time just trying not to drown.
I rented it as a video.
