We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Rachel Johnson has a thought

“Do you know, I had a thought on the way here on the tube. Do you know what it was? I dunno, I can’t believe that I’m going to say this on national radio. I thought that – it would be so unpopular – but what if the government banned, not, you know, going out or seeing your gran in her care home or all the rest of it, but banned the sale of alcohol completely until we had a vaccine? I think that would do much more than ten thousand pound fines to halt the spread of the virus.”

Rachel Johnson is Boris Johnson’s sister, but has very different political views than the Prime Minister’s. She was a candidate for the short-lived centrist pro-EU Change UK party in the 2019 European Parliament election. At one time it was thought that this party, bringing together moderates from different sides of the political aisle to oppose Brexit, would sweep the nation.

what if the government banned […] the sale of alcohol completely until we had a vaccine?

I am sure that it would speed up the development of a vaccine, due to scientists craving a drink.

But why inflict this on those of us who cannot possibly contribute to the development of a vaccine??

It’s probably one of her better ideas to be honest.

    Stupid cow.

But it would offer opportunity knocking for those of us willing to be part of the lucrative supply of illegal drink.

  • cyborg

This has been implemented in both Panama and South Africa.

The WHO recommended that Europe implement an alcohol ban as well:

Alcohol does not protect against COVID-19; access should be restricted during lockdown.

If this were to happen, and bootleggers all wore masks, would it be to prevent the spread of covid, or to hide their identities, or would they just be being ironic?

    😆 😆 😆

    Huh!
Ban alcohol, and compulsory face masks. What other countries ban alcohol and force half the population to wear face coverings.

I am beginning to suspect Rachel’s and Boris’ political views might not be that different, Rachel just doesn’t have to hide them.

  • Nicholas (Unlicensed Joker) Gray

Since people have contrarian impulses, why not ban people from staying at home, or working from home? Or ban the wearing of face-masks?
Come to that, why not design some humourous masks? “Honest, I’m NOT a bank-robber!” would be a great slogan on a mask. As would, “I’m trying to rob you! why does no-one believe me?”
Or masks that make us look like models or film-stars?

  • Boris was responsible for the ban on alcohol on the tube, so not so very different after all.

  • Does Rachel not know the US already tried this?

Maybe she indeed does not know.

    Will anyone ask her?

Boris probably knows. I’ve a vague notion that it was in Boris’ biography of Churchill (it may have been elsewhere) that I discovered Churchill’s prohibition-era doctors note, prescribing a quantity of alcohol, to be taken with meals, when in the US, to address some (not very clearly specified) medical condition.

Only if there’s a black fly in the bootleggers’ chardonnay.

Being shitfaced whilst riding on heavy machinery has many downsides. Kills a few people on said tube every year even now.

At least Bojo is mitigated some non-fiction harm……

His sister is clearly pig ignorant of recent history.

British police cars are shit so it’s time to invest in secondhand Dodge Chargers and orange paint!!! Might need ground to air missiles though for the helicopters……

    Did it die of loneliness?

  • Pat

It would concentrate minds on the question of how serious the problem now is!

  • Dr Evil

So she is a Neo-puritan who wants to ban a simple Earthly pleasure? This worked so well in the United States didn’t it? It’s a bit like trying communism three or four times and not learning the lesson that it does not work nor end well. Daft idea.

A feature of modern politics is the liberal use of the word ‘ban.’

It just rolls off the tongue and everybody just does it! Simples!

Ha ha, very good. Interesting that the Left – and these days I include Boris in that number – approve of face nappies and RoPers.

Bansturbaters should be put into a special prison where they are made to live by their own rules, as well as the rules that every single other bansturbater has ever suggested.

I do not understand. Was Rachel Johnson being sarcastic?

What is the connection between banning alcohol and curing Covid 19?

And why this obsession with a “vaccine” rather than curing the illness?

Well it the lady actually was being serious – then Mr Johnson is not as bad as his utterly crazy sister.

    By the way….

It now seems clear that, as pointed out in March, EARLY use of hydroxchlorowquine, zinc sulphate and (for NON Covid 19 problems that the lungs may develop in their weakened state) azithromycin, is the way to go – but only at dosages recommended by medical doctors with experience in actually curing the sick.

Curing the sick NOT controlling society is what a doctor is supposed to do.

It is strange looking at publications such as “The Lancet” – they are mainly concerned with POLITICS (a “Public Health Agenda) rather than treating individuals with sicknesses.

A doctor in private practice (from the days of Hyppocrates) lives by their reputation – if they do not cure many patients they do not get many more patients.

Paul Marks: “What is the connection between banning alcohol and curing Covid 19?”

I presume, if you are ‘well lubricated’ with alcohol, one’s inhibitions tend be be lower ( although the modern generation seem to have none at all ) which tends to promote close proximity and exchange of bodily fluids – the actual goal is often to infect another human being … with a human being 🙂

So traces of humanity must be identified and, stamped out altogether.

Paul Marks: “And why this obsession with a “vaccine” rather than curing the illness?”

More money in a vaccine, even if it’s entirely unnecessary. What’s even better, if ‘herd immunity’ has been achieved, then you can chuck out any old shite, call it a vaccine, and claim the credit and more importantly the money, for saving mankind.

Don’t be ridiculous Paul. We need some double blind randomised trials first.

  • Rob

Did this brainless woman, famous only for being the sister of another famous person, actually explain HOW all of this was going to work? Did anyone in the media ask her to?

  • APL

Yesterday, I made the mistake of watching the news on the BBC Telescreen. The bulletin was instructive, but not in the way the BBC intended. Vaughan Gething who holds the office of Welsh minister for Health and Social Services, was busy promoting the idea of a mandatory vaccination for COVID-19.

    Mandatory!

Paul Marks: “And why this obsession with a “vaccine” rather than curing the illness?”

How odd. Patrick Vallance☨ holds £600 K of GlaxoSmithKlien stock. So no reason to want to scare up a second lockdown, then.
