We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Justice is sometimes achieved

The Canadian government official who branded U.S. President George W. Bush a “moron” has resigned, news services report.

Consider the recent actions and achievements of this ‘moron’:

  • Propose a massive cutback in world tariffs.
  • Republicans win back control of the Senate and boost control in House of Representatives.
  • The tax cut.
  • Force UN to get serious about Iraq.
  • Stiff the Kyoto Treaty.
  • Ditto the International Criminal Court.
  • Kick out the Taliban from Afghanistan.
  • Foster vastly improved relations with Russia.
  • Make serious social security reform a key GOP agenda item.
  • Fracture the Democrat hold on the ethnic vote.

    And finally,

  • Seriously annoy the EU junta.

Okay, okay, I hear you libertarians cry, what about the Patriot Act, the Farm Bill, the steel tariffs? All fair criticisms. But the oft-repeated claim from the chattering classes that Bush is a dope is plainly silly. They are making the same mistake they made about Ronald Reagan.

A lot of people in Canada are really happy that Jean Chretin (who is unfortunately still our Prime Minister because of a fractured opposition) has finally realised that letting Francoise Ducrois stay in her job does not show him in the greatest light and accepted her resignation.

She was not amazingly popular in Ottawa and there are lots of crocodile tears being shed for her by Federal Liberals there today. Some of them have been heard singing “ding dong the witch is dead”!!

Jean Chretin and the rest of his government continue to be an embarrassment to many of us unfortunate to live in the multi-culti frozen north !!

    Canada deserves better.

  • There have also been a few downsides: Total Info Awareness, Poindexter, and Kissinger to name just three.

As for “Fracture the Democrat hold on the ethnic vote” things might appear less rosy if you lived in L.A. Bush’s apparent way to get the “ethnic vote” is to give amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Thereby encouraging more illegal immigration and perhaps ultimately leading to a Quebec-style situation in Southern California or the whole Southwest.

One would think that a Ronald Reagan would come around once in a century.

It looks like Dubya is already growing into the Reagan league. Maybe the Texan’s the one for the 21st century.

  • The Big Database O’ Freedom project seems to be in trouble thanks in no small part to the moronic idea of putting Admiral Poindexter in charge.

Putting Kissinger in charge of the stupid 9/11 commision pretty much guarantees that no one will pay attention to that report.

  • okay – you missed the point. What about the basic right of free speech and laying the cards out on the table. The Canadians think he’s a moron. So do millions of other people. I guess she should have resigned if she was asked to (she wa snot publicly) because of her role. What is your role in our new great society.
As a reporter I tend to value free speech, while others, including this Bush 2 administration, devalue it. We all know this Homeland Security Dept. is a bunch of horse—-

And you lean away from being smart (in this post only) in comparing him to Reagan, who was also a puppet of his handlers with a front of immense popularity.
How come Bush Sr. didn’t fare so well? Answer because he knew when he was being fed bullshit.

Just cause the list you provided happened doesn’t make it good or right – for any perspective. That you assign the Patriot Act etc to almost a footnote pisses me off no end. It’s people who can’t see the big picture who are electing the “man” and other si his party. He was the reason 40 percent of Americans voted for their congressional representatives according to polls – not for the local ideas which matter.
Do I believe conspiracy —- about him? No. Do I think he’s got some brains. Well, let’s just say, about as much as Reagan, who at least was a better businessman.
Your list of “achievements” is an isolationist’s friend.
    Temple

  • I’m still trying to figure out who are Dubya’s and Reagan’s handlers. Perhaps our friend Temple “Why Yes, I am part of the John Birch Society” Stark could answer that?

  • Wonderful laundry list of “W’s” accomplishments, but you forgot adding 7 former Soviet satellites to NATO and thus re-invigorating and redefining its purpose when it was almost fatally redundant.
Otherwise, you done good and it comes in useful for American Thanksgiving, S.I.
    Cheers from Texas!

  • Merde! Posted twice. Drat! Sorry!

The original post certainly attempted to lay out Bush’s achievements and I would have thought nixing the wretched Kyoto Treaty and the ICC counted as such if you are a free market libertarian like me and hostile to transnational progressivism and the Green movement.

The Patriot Act and its provisions are largely an abomination, that is true. Bush also has sought to suck up to the paleo-religious vote with his stance on things like stem-cell research. But nevertheless, his record hardly suggests the guy is a retard, as is fashionable for many commentators to assume.

Only the most naive libertarian – and there seem to be a few of them out ther – could expect a politician like Bush to do much better. And he could be a lot, lot worse.
