Do you wonder that fish spoil when wrapped in the Guardian?

Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. It is vile enough.
Everything has some good use! What is the Guardian good for? Can anyone think of a good use?
For a few days, we had custody of a crow. It constantly crapped, and the crap stank. Thus we regularly changed the newspaper lining the bottom of the (large) cage. The Guardian would be every bit as good at that as the Star Tribune was.
I am reminded of an old George Burns and Tallulah Bankhead routine in which Fred said of a newspaper:
Can anyone think of a good use?
Cut into squares and hanging from a nail behind the bog door. Course you have to be stupid enough to buy it first, and you end up doing the Black Bottom… as the print comes off. Apologies in advance Alisa. 😉
Oh come on RAB, you forgot where I grew up, I see:-O
Could it be that all the rules and regulations that, over the years, have been created for our own protection, can be traced back to the moment when it was decided that wrapping Fish & Chips in old newspapers was unhiegenic? How many deaths or serious illnesses had been caused by the old newspaper menace?
No I hadn’t forgotten Alisa, it’s just you took exception to one of my scatalogical comments on a previous thread. 🙂
Actually newspaper, if fresh i.e. a day or so old, is very hygenic. It has been cauterized by the printing process; Hot metal and all that. Oh and your own spit applied to a cut or graze helps healing because it contains natural antiseptics.
Of course, we could be blaming the wrong target. If you send a young fish to the wrong school, where he learns fancy ways, he’ll be spoiled rotten even before you catch him! I blame the parents.
