We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.
Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Good news for us hayfever sufferers I am interested in this story as I am one of many people for whom the hopefully sunnier weather of summer is accompanied by the irritation of hayfever. I do not suffer from it as badly as when I was a child but it is still unpleasant sometimes. I once played in a cricket match and my symptoms – streaming eyes and sneezing – got so bad that I could hardly continue to play the game.
Anyway, it may be soon be possible to significantly nail the problem with a vaccine.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

Immunotherapy (the existing “vaccine” referenced) actually works pretty well.
Hopefully they can improve on these results, because they’re not great.
Until 2 in 3 patients can achieve a 75% reduction in symptoms, I’m not impressed.
I found a homoeopathic (that’s what it said on the label) remedy some years back when my head was fit to burst. It’s main ingredient was lactose. Worked wonders for me and it was cheap as chips too.
When I did my Finals I was barely able to breath and had to keep a hanky pressed permanently against my nose as I typed, with eyes so irritated I struggled to see properly. These days I would probably demand (and indeed get) a First for my valliant suffering and victimhood. Maybe I could still try that. That 2:1 still grates.
These days I find it a mild inconvenience that’s certainly not worth sticking needles in myself to resolve. Not sure if that’s just because of air conditioning or whether getting older also helps.
I take generic Loratadine (sold under the brand name Claritin in the U.S.). It’s non-drowsy, lasts 24 hours, and you can get 100 pills on sale for less than $3.00 (for the generic).
The best part is that I don’t even have to take it every day – only on days when my symptoms are especially bad. Growing up in New Jersey, the worst months were April and October. Here in Kentucky, it seems to be confined to April and May.
WalterBoswell – the main ingredient of all homeopathic remedies is lactose because by and large there isn’t anything of the ‘active’ ingredient left. Despite that there are one or two such remedies that seemed to work for me – why and how I have no idea.
I need to send this information to my mom, the Queen of Hay Fever (I am but a princess). She once asked an allergist, in all seriousness, if it was possible for a surgeon to remove her sinus cavities altogether. Given that they were completely blocked with fluid 6 months out of the year (in South Carolina), there wasn’t much point for her to have them at all.
I can’t remember if the allergist flat-out told her no.
I shouldn’t have posted that.
Inevitably, it was followed by a horrible attack of sneezing, sore eyes and I’m planning my vaccine.
Claritin works very well. What many people don’t know is that it is also quite effective against a runny nose associated with colds, and even the cough that is often a result of that runny nose.

Agreed. My remedy when I feel a cold coming on is a Claritin, a zinc tablet, and a Gatorade. 🙂
