We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

NIN… for nada

Just straying off the Samizdata reservation for a moment…a pointer for Nine Inch Nails fans: Trent Reznor is giving away his latest record The Slip, and it is 100% free… to download it, go here. Reznor has released it under Creative Commons, which is a very interesting development.

Radiohead did something similar recently. They may be socialist misery-mongers, but they are not entirely unaccomplished as musicians. Perfect soundtrack to a Paul Marks article…

  • Oh, sweet! Gotta love it when a musician hands their stuff out for free. Honestly, I haven’t listened to them since The Downward Spiral way back when. This is a sign that I should give them another try.

  • Radiohead have said they won’t be doing it again (and they’re charging for the rights to remix their music too)

Trent Reznor seems to be releasing everything under a Creative Commons license allowing free distribution and remixing these days.

He’ll be banking on fans buying the CDs and vinyl when they arrive, and on coming to see his shows. I suspect he also has quite a bit of money anyway.
