We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.

Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

La Dame de Fer

I love movie posters, and I especially love movie posters that I have already seen in London, translated into someone else’s language, for somewhere else. So, I love this:

These are all over Paris just now, as are huge pictures of Kate Beckinsale (star of Underworld – Nouvelle Ere) and a smaller one of Gary Oldman in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, known here as La Taupe (the mole).

Johnathan Pearce promises that he will soon be reviewing the actual movie.

And now those of the Oxford Congregation who have each contributed so much more to England’s well-being than the Lady, those who denied her an Honorary Degree, want to bar the naming of a building (more than 51% funded by a single donor) in her honor.

    What squalor!

Roosters as kings on their own dung hill – ’til it rains and they are just chickens knee deep.

  • Hmm

I too love movie posters.. and also –

I love the coincidences, linkages and malleability of language:

“”La Dame de Fer” is an excellent title – which can be read in a multitude of ways…

    Simple translation:
La Dame de Fer = The Lady of Iron.

expanding on the word Fer – from its etymology and various constructions in Indo-European languages:

“La Dame de Fer”, can be read as = “The Lady of Man”
or perhaps as = “The Lady of Metal”
or perhaps as = “The Lady of Fire”
or even perhaps = “The Lady of Gold”

She could also be = “The Lady to Fear”

Strangely it could, at a real stretch read as = “The Cypriot Housewife”

Or if you are part of the MSM her title as “La Dame de Fer” may be read as “The Damned Affair” or “The DAMnED EfFER”!

Though, as her first name means “Pearl” or “woman of light” I think “Margaret, Dame de Fer” beats “Margaret Thatcher” any day 🙂

  • In Spain, I once saw a poster for “El Ultimo Mohicano”, which I think sounds much better than it does in English”.

Also, I thought posting foreign pictures of vampire movie posters featuring Kate Beckinsale was compulsory on Samizdata.

    That is correct.
