I just got the news: our friends in Massachusetts have received their Official Massachusetts Government Notification that their Initiative to Roll Back the Sales Tax from 6.25% to 3% is on the November 2, 2010 Ballot.

Good news. Congratulations to Howell and everyone else involved in this effort. Now the real work begins. Wait for the howls of anguish from the big-government supporters (who are legion in MA). We can’t cut taxes; we’d have to fire all the policemen and firefighters. And the teachers, too. “Essential” services are always the first to be targeted, to scare the public.
Cut taxes? Nah, we should raise them. It’s for the children!
I am sorry to hear that Carla Howell’s house will soon be vandalized repeatedly by tolerant peaceful Democrats.
I am also sorry that Carla Howell’s legal and medical history will be “leaked” to the impartial press who will ask Mass. voters to consider who is behind this measure.

I am sure she will see the error of her ways before the eventual 3rd re-count which shows her measure defeated after the needed additional 1000+ votes are found to defeat her measure, which we are assured will only hurt children and the police & fire departments.

We don’t have anything similar here in Australia! We don’t even have fixed terms! Our Prime Ministrix has just called for elections in August. We have two main parties to choose from, and no direct way to influence the programs of either party, other than by joining one.
So, good luck with the referendum!
An interesting move.
When libertarians fight income taxes the left (falsely) say we are just interested in helping the rich (as so many people do not pay income taxes).
However, everyone pays Sales Tax (where there is one). So the mask the leftists wear will be torn by this campaign.
If the statists defend keeping the Sales Tax up (which they will) their claims that are concerned about the poor will be exposed as the lies they are.
The left are concerned partly about their own incomes (so many of them either work for the state or have contracts with it) and partly for their dreams of vast projects to “reform society” i.e. impose their will on the civil interactions of other human beings (and these schemes need “resources” to finance them).
The classic case is Chicago – which has been in the hands of the “party of the poor” for so many decades. Yet it has the highest sales taxes (State, County and City combined) in the United States.
In reality the “representatives of the poor” bleed them dry.
Moss, Carla has spear headed two attempts to repeal the income tax in MA, both actually got on the ballots. I’m sure anything that was there to be found to use against her has been tried already. This is old hat for her.
I don’t support this at all. i was definitely hoping for the anti-Income Tax ballot initiative in Mass in 2008, but sales taxes are the SANEST possible taxes and 6.25 is MILD. GET RID of the Income tax, and leave this mild sales tax alone. Sure if it was, say 10% that would suck.
