Proud to be English In the Daily Telegraph of Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007 there is the following letter from Lesie Watson of Swansea (in Wales).
Ireland, Scotland and Wales have all introduced smoking bans without problems. But we read “thousands of smokers defy [English] ban” (report, July 2). What does this say about the English?
If the report is true Lesie, it means that there is still sometimes a reason to be proud to be English.

It make me proud, but I was surprised the Scots went down without a fight.

I’m not sure if you are aware of this or not, but in England at least the police will not enforce the smoking ban. Enforcement will be the responsibility of the local council, which is probably worse!
The Scots have little culture of individual freedom, its been driven out by the socialists and the high spending on welfare there.
Good luck to any pubs which wish to allow smoking, I wish them all the best against the tyranny of government
Forget the Scots, is the piece implying that the French are obeying their ban? If so it is as shocking and depressing a piece of news as I’ve heard since the last UK legislative announcement.

The French ban is only in place for public areas such as train stations, public buildings etc. They are not defying the ban at least from what I can see. The ban will come into place for private places next Feb., even then I believe that some bars (the ones with the lotto tickets and newsagents in front) will still allow smoking, I am not 100% sure on this.

Sad, but true. I wasn’t surprised in the least by my fellow Scots’ lack of backbone. Depressed, but not surprised. I knew the English wouldn’t take it lying down, though.
Never mind six million ash trays; the next step is another six million ashes.
What a pathetic dictatorial totalitarian fascist piece of legislation this is. Based on the junk science myth of danger of second hand smoke. we are all being brainwashed. Landlords should have the right to decide whether to allow smoking, in their establishment. Some decent ventilation system is cheaper than a smoke shelter.
