Some of the so-called faithful are shamefully unwilling to put up with just a teensy-weensy bit of discomfort for the sake of Gaia:

World-renowned polar explorers and educators, Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen, today suspended their historic expedition to the North Pole seven days in, citing severe safety concerns due to a combination of damaged gear, frostbite and extreme cold.

The goal of this year’s expedition has been to raise awareness among students and adults worldwide on the impact of global warming on the Arctic region.

Mind you, it could have been worse. If there was such a thing as global cooling they would have died from heatstroke.

    They have finally become self-mocking.
    All challenge is gone.

These days unfortunately global warming awareness is used to attract sponsorship which is how explorers pay for what they do. A quote from one of my favourite Arctic travellers Canadian Jerry Kobalenko in an article about his forthcoming expedition following in the footsteps of Frederic Cook will show that there are more sensible voices out there.

Global warming education is such an expedition gimmick that I’m loath to say anything about it. But the fact is, there’s a *lot* of open water this year and I suspect it will affect us as much as or even more than the NP expeditions. Cook started his trip in mid-February and he would have been totally hooped this year. Even this late, there’s very little ice around the North Water & people in Grise Fiord haven’t even managed to snowmobile to Devon Island yet to hunt musk ox, which is unprecedented.

They are indeed beyond parody now.

But I can still make fun of them for being cowards.
