I have just run across a copy of the South Park Episode [RealMedia file] (from ‘Operation Clambake’) which was blocked from airing in many places… and I thought our readers might enjoy it.

This is the Scientology episode. It aired on Comedy Central here in the States, but the rumor is that the reruns were cancelled because Tom Cruise threatened to not promote Mission Impossible 3 if the episode was shown again. Viacom is the parent company of both Paramount and Comedy Central. Also, though he denies it, it’s said that Isaac Hayes quit the show after this episode (Hayes is a Scientologist) and both Trey Parker and Matt Stone have confirmed this.
This is a fantastic episode. “Come out of the closet, Tom!”
Wot, no post about Augusto Pinochet?
It couldn’t possibly be because his brutal, murderous time in office disproves the Samizdata thesis that if you have ‘free markets’ and a privatised, neo-liberal economy, individual freedom is enhanced?
Neil hang on a minute, I thought defending dictators was your modus operandi. I am sure Pinochet would have gotten on marvellously with your pinup, Slobbo the Serb.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
Johnathan,
Even Adam Lebor, no friend of Slobbo, conceded in his biography, that the late Yugoslav President could not accurately be described as a ‘dictator’. Milosevic and his Socialist Party won regular elections in a country where 21 political parties operated. There was a vibrant opposition media. Just because you don’t like a leader doesn’t mean you should label him a ‘dictator’ when he clearly wasn’t.
Best wishes, Neil
Neil, keep it up, you are on cracking form today! Best laugh I had in ages.
BTW, I despised Pinochet and pretty much most of the “caudillo” style leaders of Latin America, notwithstanding P’s pro-market reforms. Markets, private property etc are important pre-conditions, but not sufficient, bases for free societies, so your sarcasm was misplaced. Nice try, but no cigar.
Talking of cigars, we await your comments when Fidel kicks the bucket.
Nice attempt to move the goal-posts in mid-match Johnathan, but we’re not discussing Fidel, but Milosevic.
It is factually incorrect to call him a ‘dictator’. Unless of course your definition of ‘dictator’ is a democratically elected leader who allows regular elections contested by over 20 parties and who permits the existence of a vibrant, independent media.
Neil,
Unless of course your definition of ‘dictator’ is a democratically elected leader who allows regular elections contested by over 20 parties, conducts the worst genocidal rampage in Europe since WWII, and who permits the existence of a vibrant, independent media.
I to took the liberty of correcting it for you.
Are you writing a new South Park episode about a visit to Chile or just posting to the wrong article?
Neil, I am really not interested in engaging with some sort of semantic pissing contest with an apologist for a man who, as Nick M said, conducted wholesale murders. Sebrenica? Ring any bells?
The fact that he was, in some sense, democratically elected does not get Slobbo off the hook, any more than it gets A. Hitler (elected by the wonders of PR) off the hook, either. You are an apologist for a wicked man and frankly, that debars you from being able to say anything anyone can take seriously on this matter concerning Pinochet, although no doubt that will not stop you from trying.
As for Pinochet, go and read the latest post by Paul Marks and you will see that there is no attempt whatsoever to excuse bad acts due to outcomes that might be regarded as positive.
You are a joke. The other day I called you and idiot and later retracted it, but frankly, the label sticks. Live with it, boyo.
All further off-topic comments will be removed.
Apologies to the editors for going off-topic.
Neil,
I so want to fisk you on this but I’ll stick by the editorial policy that this is a South Park thread.
Go Cows!
Hey Neil, how about you shut the fuck up or stay on topic. Though South Park posts aren’t that rare, do you mind not derailing them with your bleating? There’s a Pinochet post above this one, so go squeal over there.
Wait–you aren’t a Scientologist, are you? Hmmm…clever. Now I see why you posted on this thread.
I used to work for a cult. I was never a member or indeed a sympathiser. I merely took large amounts of their money for certain services I could perform for them.
Knowing the litigatious nature of Scientology, I’m not at all suprised that this episode got pulled or is at the very least not repeated.
Bloody brilliant take down though isn’t it!
L. Ron Hubbard is an inspiration to all those who wish to invent their own new religion, form 501(c)3 tax exempt charitable religious organizations, and bilk lots of people out of lots of money. He showed it’s a far easier project than having to die on a cross and resurrect yourself from the dead three days later. LOL
Do you think the Greens took a chapter from his playbook? Envirowhacko religion oft reminds me of Scientology.
Know any Scientologists? (Not celebrities, real people in your life.) Pretty whack.
Let’s say that Slobodan wasn’t a dictator, i.e. he was a freely elected representative of the people.
That means mass murder was the result of a democratically elected leader, i.e. the people of Serbia believed in the mass murder.
That certainly would explain why Slobodan lost elections are the dream of Greater Serbia was extinguished by the liberation of Croatian and Bosnian territories.
But either way, there is now a thread on Pinochet, and we can chat there 😀
South Park is excellent. You can find any of the episodes on bittorrent if you want a “pre-dvd release preview”
I lived in the part of England where L Ron lived died (erm sorry, went to live on another planet.) This South Park episode is just about the most fair minded and accurate summary of scientology I have seen.
And here’s the episode where Chef makes a comeback following that Scientology issue
Comming from Serbia i would like to point out that Milosevic WAS a dictator and that he was one of the greatest misfortunes that befell my nation.
Also i like to point out that Croats and Moslems aswell as Albanians did warcrimes.
