Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. Our son didn’t stop believing in Santa Claus. Instead when he was six he concluded, and came to us for verification, that Santa was a symbol of good things rather than a specific person.
You must have been very proud.
Remarkable! That is amazingly sophisticated for a six year old. Are you home schooling?
I’m with British comedian Rory McGrath who, when told by another boy at the age of 4 that ‘Santa is your Dad’, told his father that he was very proud to have learned that his father spent Christmas Eve flying round the Earth to deliver presents.
Are we home schooling? Not anymore. He’s in Kansas City, 9 hours drive from here living with the woman we hope will be his second wife.
We did, and had indeed started discussing the world with him by then. When stopped in traffic by a passing train it was my practice back then to point out various identifiable loads, and led at least once from that to the economics of international trade.
