Chinese Internet vigilantes have launched a hunt for a self-professed British bounder who has sparked outrage by blogging about his seduction of women in Shanghai. The campaign to uncover the identity of the blogger and have him kicked out of China is the latest in a series of online denunciations that have drawn comparisons with the humiliations inflicted by mobs during the Cultural Revolution.
Traffic on the Sex and Shanghai blog [currently restricted to members only – JW] had surged from 500 hits to more than 17,000, thanks to a swarm of castration threats, anti-British rants and attacks on women who sleep with foreigners.
That some Chinese men are haunted by a sense of sexual inadequacy should come as no surprise – it is a trait that can be uncovered universally. However, there seems a particularly ‘Chinese’ way of expressing this, combining a sense of wounded pride, chauvinism and sexual frustration. I recall similar goings on a few years ago when a young Chinese female author wrote a scandalous (by Chinese standards) book that was subsequently banned. The protagonist, a Chinese teenage girl, got up to all kinds of naughtiness. In the most infamous scene, she has sex with a German in a public bathroom, stating something like “riding his big cock was like sitting on a fire hose”. Such explicit prose brought forth a torrent of outraged letters to the author and messages posted on bulletin boards. Most of them were deeply offended by the sexual encounter with the foreigner, and many threatened sexual violence involving the respondent’s own (presumably fictitious) monster appendage.
The ugly controversy these isolated tales of sexual licence generate obscures – yet also confirms – the fact that generally, Chinese women are probably the most sexually conservative in East Asia. Despite its ostensible headlong rush to modernise and embrace the rest of the world (not an entirely apt metaphor, considering my forthcoming conclusion), such controversies show that much of Chinese society harbours a visceral discomfort with the consequences of throwing open the gates to Johnny Foreigner. This evidently includes large elements of the net-savvy middle class; a demographic that usually has progressive views ascribed to it. Socially, China is still quite an illiberal society, despite the adoption of many Western values. Foreign workers in a city like Shanghai can lose sight of this in the familiar surroundings of expensive consumer goods, rows of the steel and glass churches of capitalism and a general will to party like it’s 1999 amongst the city’s elite and emerging elite. Nevertheless, as this story confirms, conflating the two cultures can still be dangerous; even in the midst of China’s latest Cultural Revolution.

First, even in the decadent West, attitudes to sex are still hard to fathom. The same media that promotes homosexual “marriage” and has kind words for the homosexual predators of the North American Man-Boy Love Association was recently shocked — SHOCKED! — that there were polygamists Out West in the US. Second, young Chinese males today are on the leading edge of a demographic disappointment. Given the Chinese government’s “One Child” policy, the traditional Chinese preference for sons, and the ready availability of sex-selective abortion & female infanticide (strangely ignored by the usual suspects at the New York Times), there are something over 10 million “surplus” males in the Chinese cohort in their teenage years. Lots & lots of testosterone-charged young Chinese males who are never going to get a date, let alone a wife. Under such circumstances, how are the Chinese expected to react to tales of a nubile young Chinese woman getting her pleasuring courtesy of foreign males?

This economic “miracle” will be (and is) acompanied by a large expansion of the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) and PRC global influence. The future ability of the PRC to project its power around the globe has terrible geo-political ramifications.
Previous changes in the established world order e.g. the collapse of the (West) Roman Empire, the decline (and eventual fall to the hands of the Muslims) of the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire at Constantinopol (“Istanbul”), the displacement of France and England by a newly unified Prussian Germany, the rise of the 3rd Reich, and the rise of the USSR have all been terrible, and marked by uncomprehensible amounts of bloodshed and attrocities.
The behavious of the PRC (historic and recent) is far from encouraging. The annexation of neighborus, followed by a government-instigated colonization policy, more-or-less unprovoked attack agains UN troops in Korea during the Korean War, support of North Vietnam against S. Vietnam and Western Allies, the PRC invasion of Vietnam after the Western Allies departed, the official PRC policy of the use of its military against ROC on Taiwain if it chooses to “seceed” (maintain its defacto independence, become an internationally recognized state). All these events were carried out when the PRC was far more impotent than it is now. Currently, it is stonewalling against a UN solution in Sudan, using its vassal sock-pupet state North Korea to harass Japan, S. Korea, and the US, propping up the Iranians including the sale of weapons, preventing UN diplomatic resolution agains the Iranians, etc.
Now that the setup is complete, let us return to the article:
This article indicates a collectist/nationalist mob frenzy combined with a large component of xenophobia, and shame (the desire to “prove” oneself) within the collective PRC psyche. If this is indeed the case, then we are dealing with a population extremely willing to wage wars and commit attrocities (on a scale the likes of which not seen since or potentially even during the brief tenure of the 3rd Reich).
Let us also rember the “ancient” (not really that old) Chinese tradition of executing all the “white devils” (including Western diplomats/envoys, journalists, women, children during the continuation of the “Opium Wars” and the “Rightenous and Harmonious Society”/”Boxer” Rebellion/Genocide) within its realm from time to time. Furthermore, having read several things on the matter of the Opium Wars by PRC nationals, there apprears to be a large sentiment of “historical wronging” and the “need to right it” and “remove the shame from the nation” within the PRC, reminiscent of the sentiment found within the Weimar Republic after the Armistice (and we all know how well that worked out; answer for the ahistorical: WWII).

I’m wondering how much the increase in the male-female ratio in China is affecting the reaction of Chinese males. Bad enough there are fewer women to compete for, now they have to compete with foreigners too.
