We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.
Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Samizdata quote of the day My team, The Royal Philharmonic, are facing relegation after our key bassoonist was hit by a hamstring injury, and we had to play Terry Butcher on the kazoo.
– Harry Hutton responds to The Times publishing a “league table for British orchestras”.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

From The Times article, about the BBC Symphony:
Not a band regularly prepared to give 110 per cent, or to express much personality.
Yup, that’s the kinda direction I’d give if I were a conductor. “Now in the second movement I want 110% on those oboes…”
Which is perhaps one of the reasons why I’m not a conductor.
Cute, but P.D.Q. Bach did this much better with the “New Horizons in Music Appreciation” sportscast of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
I’m highly resistive. That’s why I’m not a conductor.
And since we’re comparing orchestral performance to team sports, I will amuse at least the USian readers by mentioning that the bases are loaded…
Are there team anthems?
I can’t play the kazoo, but I’d love to play Terry Butcher on my harmonica. Could someone post the sheet music?
In Brazil someone once asked me what I thought of Coldplay’s sheet music. It took me a while to work out what he meant.
But he was right. It really is sheet.
OT sorry but a minor gem.
Just seen on the BBC’s Test The Nations I.Q. program, a scrolling banner at the bottom of the screen saying
“1 in 50 have an I.Q. in the top 2%”
Never!
Rich,
Just been watching the same train wreck of a show. I never caught that one at the time but I am now deeply amused. Thanks.
Triticale,
I’m highly resistive. That’s why I’m not a conductor.
Well that’s such a terrible joke that I’m vaguely amused.
Combining football and music? How about:-
Hamilton Academicals of St Martin’s in the Fields.
As an Ipswich Town supporter, may I express my outrage that Terry Butcher, brilliant defender in the golden days of Bobby Robson’s tenure at Portman Road, should be so mocked by Hutton like this.
Vengeance will be swift.
