Samizdata quote of the day

Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand.
I don’t care, I’m still free. You can’t take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black. Tell ’em I ain’t comin’ back.
Burn the land and boil the sea. You can’t take the sky from me.
Have no place I can be since I found Serenity
But you can’t take the sky from me.

– Joss Whedon

Great series, shame it got cancelled.
Looking forward to the forthcoming movie.

This show made me wish for a space frontier in a way that no other show has done before. It’s actually painful for me to watch because it makes me long for that type of freedom so strongly.

  • Too bad about that whole relativity thing. I love the space elevator and all, but it will be difficult to evolve that kind of space frontier when going from one star to the next takes lifetimes for those not travelling at your speed.

Here’s to hoping we’re effectively braindead about our knowledge of physics!

    Wicked sick show though…

  • They’ve just started showing Firefly on Foxtel in Australia, the first episode showed 2 nights ago. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Anybody who hasn’t seen this show should buy the DVD set – it’s excellent value for money, and includes the episodes in the correct order and indeed all the episodes seeing as Fox in their infinite stupidity cancelled the show.

And go see the movie next week.

Believe me, you WON’T be disappointed!

  • I’m told Sky are doing a Firefly weekend this weekend – not sure what channel or exactly when, though… I’m waiting to borrow the DVD from a friend. I’ve heard people describe the idea of a western in space as a bit odd, but it makes perfect sense to me! I’m looking forward to seeing this one.

We may not be able to travel to other stars, but it should be possible to so spread throughout our own system that much of the content of that show might still be possible… Imagine a future with literally hundreads of thousands of colonized asteroids, a terra-formed mars, and decent ships that can cross the whole thing in say 6 months… You can still have your libertarian space utopia.. 🙂

It’s the Sci Fi Channel that are doing the Firefly Weekend (the channel that showed it originally in the UK). Starts at 1:00pm (12:00 on Sunday) & runs ’til 8:00pm both days.

    Very well worth seeing.

Does no one besides me think “Firefly” owes more than a passing debt to “Blakes 7?”

Has someone here been reading Dean’s World? http://www.deanesmay.com? We’re rather fond of Firefly, and also of England, over there.

    Words to live by, those.

Been engrossed in the series in the last few months since they started reshowing it on SciFi. Got the DVD set now.

Its an amazing time when so much quality can be put onto such few disks.

Even if the spaceships aren’t ever possible, we know that kind of freedom is.

    > it’s excellent value for money

Off point, but nevertheless, I love that phrase. I never hear it over here, but it makes the point so well, so perfectly and concisely. Perhaps our revolution divorced us too far from the Mother Tongue. Youse guys still got a way wid it.

  • Just got back from the movie. Loved it! Ya gotta see it.

    Shiny indeed.

Now where do I get the DVD set of “Firefly”

    Shiny indeed.

Tis indeed, but a trifle sad, also…

    Time to watch another episode….
