Libertarian Alliance conference in London The conference of the Libertarian Alliance and Libertarian International will be in London starts tomorrow and it is not too late to come if you wish. It last from Saturday 22nd to Sunday 23rd November 2003. It is possible to register and pay on-line.
The speakers include fellow Samizdatista David Carr and serial Samizdata commenter Paul Coulam.
I hope to meet up with a few of you there.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

Yes it looks like it will be pretty good. The organiser, Chris Tame, tells me that there has been “the usual bloody last minute rush” of people to come to this thing, so networking possibilities are now looking good.
A fortnight ago, Chris was effing and blinding to the effect that if people didn’t want to “support” such events, then to heck with them, or word to that effect.
Now he’s saying he’s going to keep going with these things.
Good news.
… although, speaking personally, I will be watching the Rugby World Cup Final (England v … some island in the Pacific I think they said) and I won’t be getting there until lunch time on the Saturday.
£85, is he kidding? I can’t make it because of the rugby and band commitments. I hope you all have a good time.

Ok, I admit to slight confusion here. What does an attendee of this conference get that can’t be had by the terabyte out on the (free, no travel required) internet? There is not a shortage of libertarian bloviation.
You get to see all these bright sparks in person…that is what you pays your money for. To be fair, you could make that argument about any conference vs papers/the internet.
Dodge: Absolutely right. Although when it comes to libertarianism, there are some ‘bright sparks’ that you just don’t want meet in person… 😉
£85 is quite reasonable for a conference. Most of the local government, LGA, CPA, Audit Commission etc. conferences I get invited to attend cost more like £200 a day. Of course it is the taxpayer that is picking up the bill for most of the attendees. They also tend to be mind-numbingly tedious.
I would have liked to go but I had other commitments. Conferences are great for meeting like-minded people. Unless, of course, they are run by the LGA, CPA, Audit Commission etc. when they tend to be full of Guardianistas.
