Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. The Department of Defense here in the US used to be called the Department of War. Did that mean they were trying to put a stop to war? If that was what they trying to do, then they failed miserably (1812, Civil War, WW1, WW2, lots of smaller skirmishes, etc), just like you’d expect a gov’t agency to do. But then….I think I have a paradox here. Argh!
Ah, but there you have it Andy… Dept of War was ostensibly about being strong in order to prevent wars, so you just prove the point. They failed.
That explains the name of the mass transit system in my neck of the woods: Dallas Area Rapid Transit.
So the current Dept of Defense, with it’s gazillion dollar budget, is about what? Duct tape and SaranWrap? It sure didn’t provide much defense, so perhaps it’s really about offense?
