We are developing the social individualist meta-context for the future. From the very serious to the extremely frivolous... lets see what is on the mind of the Samizdata people.
Samizdata, derived from Samizdat /n. - a system of clandestine publication of banned literature in the USSR [Russ.,= self-publishing house]

Carry on, gun-control I briefly toyed with the idea of posting this under the ‘Humour’ category but, the trouble is, I am not making this up. I couldn’t possibly make this up.
In a country where virtually all forms of private firearm ownership have been outlawed, there was a march today in South-East London by a group calling itself ‘Mothers Against Guns’ in protest at rising gun violence.
But that thigh-slapping irony descends into tragi-farce:
“The march had to be re-routed away from the crime scene of the early morning shooting outside Pharaoh’s Pub in Peckham Road.
Police confirmed one man was killed on the spot and that another was in a stable condition in hospital after the incident.
Sometimes I feel as if this isn’t a nation anymore. More like an open-air Theatre of the Absurd.

Who Are We? The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling.
We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe.

And I bet they think the answer is even more legislation. Remember boys and girls, the politically easy option is to legislate against the law abiding. What we need are more restrictions on the shooting sports; yes, that’ll solve the problem. I mean it has in the past, hasn’t it? HASN’T IT?
Soon to crumble slowly into the Theater of the Damned.
You better start stockpiling pointy rocks. It’s only a matter of time before they are banned also.
The modern Leftist religion has several dogmas, such as gun control works, or higher taxes stimulate the economy, or Alger Hiss was framed.
Proponents of gun control continue to support gun control for the same reason devout Catholics believe in the Immaculate Conception, or evangelical Christians believe the Biblical account of the Creation. Such things are matters of faith, not fact, and as such are immune to rational examination.
For a Leftist, denying Gun Control is heresy. Guns are Evil Talismans, with supernatural powers of mind control. No matter how few guns are legally held in society, no matter how ineffective gun laws are, they will always seek to “control” them further.
Kevin
Seems the key word in “gun control” is control. Lefties love to control. It has to start with guns, then they control your material well being (taxes), and after that comes thought control.
Kevin, are you sure you know what the Immaculate Conception actually means? It does not mean ‘virgin birth’.
I think I do, but not being Catholic, I may be mistaken.
Feel free to enlighten me….
Kevin
Greetings:
It is a sad day when members of our society cannot agree to disagree. It is not only mothers that are losing their youth to this deadly epidemic of gun violence, but it is “others” also. Guns are not toys, and in the hands of our youth and criminals – it is a deadly weapon. We must instill in our youth that there are alternatives to violence.

No they don’t learn, the answer to gansta-wannabes and Yardies packing Uzis and Ingram MAC10 submachine guns is —wait for it—– to stop under 18s owning air weapons and ban Co2 BB guns and/or replica blank firers. God that’ll save us all then.
Oh yeah, and to have an amnesty so people who are not criminals can hand over broken air rifles and the occasional rusted up Webley revolver their great grandfather has left over from World War One
(while the real criminals laugh and carry on bringing fully automatic weapons in from Eastern Europe)
It is truely pathetic, but if you’re a cat near a council estate then you might be relieved.
Gun crime has been linked to ‘gangster culture’ and young people wanting to emulate lawbreaking underworld crooks.
This is enhanced by the government criminalising and further restricting any kind of positive role models for responsible firearms usage such as the shooting sports. Kids these days see guns as gangster tools, and that is the image they want.
My final comment will not be well received everywhere, but here goes….
Research in the USA shows that where concealed firearms (handguns) are legally permitted, the instances of violent crime such as rape and robbery are sometimes lower than in nearby states where concealed firearms are illegal. There have been cases in interstate areas where criminals travel from concealed carry state to ‘gun free’ state to carry out their crimes as there is less chance of being shot while robbing or raping their victim.
Nige,
I have lived in states where it is legal to carry firearms. Less violence was a result. While I appreciate the opinion of Mothers against Guns, I do not agree that Gun Control is an answer.
A well informed student, parent and society would be a better response to the issue of gun violience.
The NRA is a great organization, offing supervised training in the care and handeling of guns.
Including those wonderful BB guns, that people purchase for their 6 year olds.
Responsible gun ownership and firearm training is what should be considered not banning guns.
