Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is a little like expecting the bull not to attack you because you are a vegetarian.

Who Are We?The Samizdata people are a bunch of sinister and heavily armed globalist illuminati who seek to infect the entire world with the values of personal liberty and several property. Amongst our many crimes is a sense of humour and the intermittent use of British spelling. We are also a varied group made up of social individualists, classical liberals, whigs, libertarians, extropians, futurists, ‘Porcupines’, Karl Popper fetishists, recovering neo-conservatives, crazed Ayn Rand worshipers, over-caffeinated Virginia Postrel devotees, witty Frédéric Bastiat wannabes, cypherpunks, minarchists, kritarchists and wild-eyed anarcho-capitalists from Britain, North America, Australia and Europe. Reminds me of one of my favorite expressions (source unknown); “‘Fair’ is a place old men go look at livestock.”
You know what’s funny is that vegetarians actually believe that. I was at this vegan fest and the speaker was talking about how he was able to wake up and look them (bulls) right in the eye.
Whatever helps you get up, I guess.
The problem with many witty quotations and slogans is that the humour gets past you before you can think about whether it is true or not. This certainly applies to “life isn’t fair” style quotes. They always seem to be used to justify deliberate chosen unfairness, as though the fact that the world is not perfectly just makes it alright to be unkind and unjust in ones own dealings.
